REAL STEM OR JUST BANGS?

Autumn School Term Tour

Wandsworth Council’s Battersea Park Fireworks display will broaden its offer beyond the night sky to local classrooms in a series of educational workshops, an explosive stage show that uncovers the science and artistry behind professional firework displays! "Real STEM or Just Bangs?" takes school children on a thrilling journey through the world of pyrotechnics, revealing how STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) plays a key role in the dazzling firework shows we enjoy.

Partnering with Titanium Fireworks, expert Matthew Tosh will dive into the inner workings of the renowned Battersea Park Fireworks display. These engaging workshops explore how pyrotechnicians meticulously design and choreograph firework bursts to create stunning visual and sound effects, all timed perfectly to music.

Far more than just a show, this hands-on experience reveals the chemistry behind colour creation, the engineering of sound effects, and the precision required to ensure both the beauty and safety of firework displays. Drawing on Matthew’s most popular school programmes, the workshop demonstrates how STEM fundamentals are essential to creating awe-inspiring fireworks not just at Battersea, but across the globe.

In addition to providing an exciting look at fireworks, the show aims to inspire school-aged children to explore potential career paths in STEM. By connecting the spectacle of fireworks to real-world STEM applications, the workshop encourages young minds to consider future roles in science, engineering, and creative industries. Audiences will leave with a behind-the-scenes understanding of how professionals blend science, art, and technology to craft unforgettable firework performances—and maybe even spark an interest in a future career.

The four local schools participating in October this year are St. Mary’s RC Primary School, Sacred Heart RC Primary School, Harris Academy Battersea, and St. George’s CoE Primary School.
